LBMA reported London vault holdings for end-August 2026 at 9,632 tonnes of gold, a 1.03% increase on the previous month, and stated the figure as approximately 770,571 gold bars. Silver holdings were 28,431 tonnes, up 0.77%. The series is reported monthly and one month in arrears, records holdings on the last day of the month, and covers metal held inside the M25, including the Bank of England’s gold alongside the London commercial vaults.
LBMA’s notes to the data state that the calculation for the number of bars assumes a standard gold bar weighs 12.5 kg, so the count is the tonnage divided by that assumption and moves with it. Under the LBMA Good Delivery Rules, physical settlement of a loco London gold trade is a bar of 350 to 430 fine troy ounces, approximately 10.9 to 13.4 kilograms, at a minimum fineness of 995.0, with gross weight expressed in troy ounces in multiples of 0.025 and rounded down. Where an Approved Weigher’s figure differs from the one determined by the refiner, the weigher’s weight prevails, and that weight is what enters the weight list against the bar’s serial number. Physical settlement runs on those entries, one line per numbered bar, and each bar contributes its own fine content rather than a nominal unit. The same LBMA notes place all physical forms inside the London total, including coin, kilo bars and small bars alongside large wholesale bars, so part of the 9,632 tonnes is metal that carries no Good Delivery weight list. LBMA publishes the figure on the fifth business day of the following month, which makes the 9,632 tonnes a stock recorded at end-August 2026.
The bar specifications and the weighing and weight-list procedures are set by LBMA in the Good Delivery Rules. Acceptance of an individual bar into a London vault rests with that vault’s manager, who holds discretion over which bars are accepted under the same Rules.
