Swiss customs records 156.5 tonnes of gold exports in August, 102.1 to the UK

The Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS) released Swiss customs figures for August 2026 on 17 September, and its foreign trade statistics for gold, silver and coins record gold exports of 156.5 tonnes, 65% more than in July, of which 102.1 tonnes went to the UK. FOCBS publishes the results by partner country each month in its SwissImpex dashboard.

LBMA’s London vault data put gold held in London at 9,632 tonnes at the end of August, 1.03% more than a month earlier. FOCBS counts gold declared for export to the UK during the month. LBMA counts what vaults inside the M25 held on 31 August after every arrival and departure, in every physical form from wholesale bars to coin, with the Bank of England’s holdings included. Neither series identifies individual bars: FOCBS records unwrought gold of every bar size under customs tariff heading 7108.1200, by weight. For a counterparty placing bars in London or moving them out, each bar’s serial number, refiner, gross weight and fineness are listed on the weight list or bar list that accompanies the consignment, and the receiving vault books the metal against those serials.

Since 1 January 2021 FOCBS has split imports under heading 7108.1200 into mined gold (key 911), refined gold of at least 99.5% fineness (keys 912 and 913) and refined gold below 99.5% (key 914), publishing the split by country each month in the I14Y dataset BAZG_GOLD_LAND. Exports carry no such split and appear by destination only, so the August lines to the UK, the US and India record where the metal went and nothing about where it was mined or which refinery cast it. A compliance review that needs the inflow of mined gold reads it, country by country, from the key-911 import lines.
